| Abstract: | This paper reveals a regional character of French cereals markets in the 19th century. The paper focuses on the regional responses to the market transformation led by the rise of cereals circulation. As for the archival source, the study depends mainly on an agricultural questionnaire launched in 1866 by the government. The Côte-d'Or cereals had been sold traditionally into the Southern France, especially around Lyon. However, this market faced a structural change in the middle of the 19th century: the imported wheat, especially low priced Russian wheat, threatened the grain markets of the Côte-d'Or. Coping with this crisis, it was the merchants of the Côte-d'Or that took initiative in opening up the new business for their wheat sales. Those merchants succeeded in reorganizing the market under the free trade regime, which as a result weakened the traditional economic ties between the Burgundy and the Southern France. |
